How to install Fallout 4 mods
Below you’ll find a selection of essential third-party software which will help you install Fallout 4 mods, work out conflicts between them, and make other useful tweaks to the base game.
While Bethesda introduced official mod support to Fallout 4 in April 2016, giving modders access to the Creation Kit and creating an in-game mod hub, you’ll still want to use third party software to manage your mods. And, as convenient as it is, subscribing to mods through Steam Workshop will just create more problems. Gopher, who makes countless mod videos and guides for the likes of Skyrim and Fallout, made this handy Nexus Mod Manager guide that should make things easier.
One of the biggest challenges when it comes to modding Fallout 4 is stopping your mods from falling out with each other. Not all mods are compatible, and even when they are, putting them in the wrong place in the build order can cause all sorts of problems. LOOT checks for load errors, highlights problem plug-ins and occasionally offers solutions. It’s essential.
A lot of the mods you end up installing can’t function without the Fallout 4 Script Extender, so you need to make this one of the first things you download. Note that, from now on, you’ll need to launch Fallout 4 with the script extender, not through Steam. You can launch it directly from the .EXE or by connecting it to the Nexus Mod Manager.
You can and should make quite a few .INI tweaks to Fallout 4, even if you aren’t going to be delving into the world of modding, and the Fallout 4 Configuration Tool makes that a lot less stressful. Instead of searching the file and trying to figure out what does what, this tool shows you all the changes you can make and then enacts them with the press of a button. It also saves the .INI as read-only after use, so it won’t revert back to the default version.
The thing every Bethesda game needs: a huge unofficial patch that fixes countless unresolved bugs. Even after a few years, you’ll still want to make this one of the first things you download. It’s made by the folks behind the Unofficial Oblivion and Skyrim patches, so they’re old hands at this by now.
Because achievements are sacred and a mark of someone’s skill and hard work, it would be disgusting if someone was able to earn them when they’re using mods, right? No. That’s stupid. Here’s a mod that enables all achievements no matter what you change. Stick it to the man.
On this week's Mod Roundup, a better way to conduct conversations in Fallout 4, followers that level with you in Skyrim, a complete—and we do mean complete—overhaul of The Witcher 3, and a big update for a Game of Thrones mod for Mount & Blade: Warband.
Here are the most promising mods we've seen this week.
Full Dialogue Interface, for Fallout 4
Fallout 4's conversation UI leaves a lot to be desired. For example, instead of a list of full responses, you only get a brief idea of the tone of what you might say. It can lead to some misunderstandings. And, since this is your character, it makes sense that you'd know what you were actually going to say before you say it. This mod reverts the system to one more similar to Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Find it here.
Followers Level With You, for Skyrim
As you climb the ladder of power in Skyrim, you followers join you.. up to a point. Most followers have a level cap of 20, and you may have noticed that when you reach level 40 or 50 your lackeys are comparatively weak against your enemies (to the point that they're getting their lights knocked out immediately). This mod, available on the Steam workshop, means they'll level right alongside you. The Skyrim's the limit.
School of the Roach, for The Witcher 3
Modders are hard at work on changes—major ones—to The Witcher 3. The School of the Roach mod just entered open beta, and it comes with a huge list of changes, starting with increases to the game's difficulty. It also aims to improve combat, rework the economy, provide a more realistic encumbrance system, and make changes to the leveling system. Alchemy, armor, weapons, skills, menus.. it sounds like nothing is being overlooked. Read more about it, and help test the beta, right here.

A World of Ice and Fire, Beta 8, for Mount & Blade: Warband
![Fallout Fallout](/uploads/1/2/3/7/123709147/229458607.jpg)
This mod for Mount & Blade: Warband, which transforms the game into Westeros from Game of Thrones, first arrived in 2013, but it's still being improved and added to. It's just entered it's 8th beta version and with it arrives a whole host of changes, additions, and improvements. The list of changes is too long to tackle here, but you can read more about it, and download it, it at Mod DB.
VAULT GIRL MOD DEVELOPMENT THREAD
[NOTICE: VAULT GIRL MOD DEVELOPMENT IS ON HOLD]
I haven't had time to devote to Vault Girl Mod, too many other projects and real life things to deal with. Feel free to use what I have already released and I grant permission to anyone to create patches or use images from my mod as long as they give credit and link back to my mod here.
Best, bigC
Introduction
This mod is intended to increase the prominence of Vault Girl in the game. This mod replaces textures in the game world and parts of the user interface to feature vault girl. There are three main options available for Vault Girl. One of my own design, the classic fallout Vault Girl, and one based on the popular Vault Girl design by shadman. There is already an Alpha version of the mod available for download that I continuously update.

This eliminates the need for the vanilla level up menu, which I have no plans to use.

If you want to craft posters from this mod in the workshop, these mods add posters to the workshop:

There is Still Work to Do
So while an icon replacer mod might not seem like that big of a mod, it really is. Just counting perks there are 70 animations, and then another 70 that are colored in the skill tree (don't get me started on that, I have no idea how to edit it yet). There are like 20 variants on the walking animation for the status screen, and then several other random animations scattered throughout the game.
